ROCK&READ 52 - Tora Alice Nine [Interview 1]

— The last time he appeared in this magazine was in summer 2008. Back then, he talked to us revealing his opinions about the situation he was in, in which there was a gap between his popularity and his skills. Now, it has been five and a half years since then. Right now they have become a strong rock band, but this time we’d like to draw out even more from him about the changes in his mental state and sound.

Tora: Please treat me well. But has it really been five and a half years?

— We talked about when you suffered from a neck hernia while you were on tour. After skipping a few lives, you soon revived. You said that when you couldn’t even move your left hand as an effect of the hernia, you thought, “It’s all over, being a guitarist as well as my life.”

Tora: I did. But I’m totally alright now. I was worried that I would get into relapse, but it’s completely fine right now. That has become the past. Things have changed, including my music. I’ve grown older as a human being, and so have my music.

— But that’s a good thing, isn’t it?

Tora: Well, I suppose so. Alice Nine is not the kind of band that has a strict ‘this is Alice Nine’ concept, and we’re also not the kind of band that keeps doing the same thing over and over again. We always want to do new stuff every single time, so I think we’re a band that continues while we go through a lot changes. That’s the way we are until today and will be so from now on.

— I see. But I think that you do have a certain stereotype as a band. I’m saying that because your new single [SHINING] is a bright, positive song that tells people to stand up and have a strong determination, but I really felt an Alice Nine-ish stereotype in it.

Tora: Of course. Perhaps we do have that stereotype. I think that what everyone considers as Alice Nine’s stereotype is the bright, sparkly part of our music, right? We have released a lot of singles and lead songs that gave bright impression, that’s why we are often thought to have this image. However, if you give a good listening to Alice nine, you might find that we are actually a band with a lot of heavy, hard and maniacal sound. But why doesn’t this kind of image ever stick to us? Sometimes I wonder about that too (lol).

— That’s for sure. There were even more tunes that sounded like that in the albums. It’s a mystery, huh.

Tora: Right. That’s because there’s also a side of us that is the ‘Album Band’ that performs lives after making albums. Doesn’t it feel like, in our singles, the parts that focused on being bright and cheerful were stripped off? When
that is easily received by people as a substitute of Alice Nine’s introduction, it might be perceived as an entrance ((to our.music)) that has a pleasant image. But I sometimes wonder if it isn’t slightly different, when you end.up being caught up in this image. The.reason is because we are truly a maniacal band in terms of the music that we do.

— I think so. Until the release of your second album, [Alpha] in November 2007, your appearance had also taken a bright, sparkly image, and I thought that maybe this image had gone ahead of your music. But then you also have a heavy tuned song like [Kowloon – NINE HEADS RODEO SHOW-] that you released as a single and also as one of the songs in your first album, [Zekkeishoku] that was on sale April 2006. This song has always been added in your lives even until now. It’s a rather famous song. It really is a wonder, isn’t it?

Tora: Yes, certainly. But when the band had just formed, we were quite a bright, sparkly band (lol). I think the band was seen in a “These guys, they’re not making music seriously, are they!” kind of perspective. Well, there was practically no time to make music seriously. But of course, it’s not as if Hiroto only joined the band from the start to decide when and where to eat, and it’s not like the rest of us were only there to have fun. We formed the band with the intention to make music wholeheartedly, but all of a sudden we joined our current company, and we became so busy. It was a situation where we hardly had any songs but we became busy nonetheless, and to do a live without having any song… If you’re asking me now what we had been so busy doing back then, well, we were doing photoshoots (lol). It’s because we thought we had to do photoshoots no matter what. We had such a shocking photoshoot schedule. I think there was a time when the schedule was so jam-packed, we showed up in 30 magazines in just one month. We were doing photoshoots every single day, nothing but photoshoots even though the tour was approaching. We didn’t even get to do rehearsal. We didn’t have time to rehearse. It felt like, when are we going to write songs!? Although, unexpectedly, it seems that lately there are many music magazines that went out of production, right? Well, of course we are grateful that those people from the magazines helped us and asked for us, but then we didn’t have any song, we couldn’t rehearse. However, we got the tour going, and then the storm of photoshoots that took place every day… And with that, the busy days continued. Being as busy as we were, we were gradually becoming more and more misunderstood.

— Did people ask, ‘Are you guys even selling!?’?

Tora: Right, right, right (lol). It was totally a delusion, so to say. All the busy days we went through, could those be just a delusion!? Something like that (lol). This situation continued until we released our second album which
you just mentioned, [Alpha]. In fact, as our popularity began to emerge, everyone also started to misunderstand us for some reason. That’s how it seemed. But around that time our busy days were beginning to relatively ease up. The moment we were settled down, there were a lot of things that we used to do that vanished in an instant. We tried performing in a large live house, taking our chances without having the skills to back us up. I think the audience could tell as well. It made us realize and we came to the point where we thought, “Let’s do this more seriously.”

— The last time you appeared in this magazine, you also talked to us about your first experience performing at the International Forum Hall A, September 3rd 2007.

Tora: Yes. Despite thinking it would be a sold out live, it wasn’t. It changed everyone’s way of thinking in an instant. Or rather, it made us reconsider. It really felt like we began to re-evaluate everything. I think that it was from around that time that we started becoming a band in its true meaning.

— That maybe so. Shou-kun, too, often says that whenever he looks back to those days, he thinks you guys were “a band playing house”. However, you are certainly a band that prioritized on vigor. I think that you had a good start, because it’s important to run swiftly counting on that vigor.

Tora: But I think it’s completely unacceptable if all that was not accompanied with the adequate skills. If I attempt to look back now to our earlier lives, I think we did an awful job. We were very, very horrible. The reason was because, for those lives, we simply lined up the songs that we wrote during the spare time we could find in between our busy schedule. The Japanese-Western blend concept that we had back in our early days was just something we said because it was preferable  that we had some kind of concept. Because of that, our earlier costumes had that kind of feeling as well. But those components in particular were no longer incorporated within our music, so there was no meaning in establishing that as our concept.anymore. As we came to the phase where we noticed, “No that’s not how it’s suppose to be,” we removed that concept.

— In June 2009, you guys changed the way you write your band’s name from [アリス九號.] to [Alice Nine]. What did you mean by that?

Tora: I suppose back then we felt that our expanse had narrowed, so we changed the writing to English. The kanji writing left a big impression. At that moment, the desire to widen our expanse was strong.

— I see. But back then Tora-kun said, “We don’t have a fixation for big venues.”

Tora: That hasn’t changed even until today. We love performing lives so the size of the venue is irrelevant. The best thing is to be able to perform a live with a sense of unity, so we’re not picky about the size of the venue.

— You also said, “We don’t have a certain goal like performing at Budoukan or someplace like that.”

Tora: I guess that has changed. Recently I think I would like to stand on Budoukan at least once. Now it feels like we have things we would like to show at Budoukan. Until today I get the feeling that I don’t really understand why things like that exist. Of course, back then we did want to perform a live that was fitting for a place like Budoukan, but we didn’t have a grasp on the harsh reality. We felt we weren’t suitable for it, or should I say, we weren’t worth it. But now we’ve gained the confidence that we can properly reveal to everyone. I’d like to try to stand there one more time with our present state. I think that, recently, we’ve come to the point where we can do a live in the sense of ‘creating a venue’. Even though we are playing the same songs, if as much as the song’s interval is different, the way people see it will drastically change. Until that day, all we thought was “let’s just play the songs”, so it would have been okay if we hadn’t performed in Budoukan. We hadn’t set our minds as to what we wanted to show even though we were performing in such a huge place.
But now there are things we wish to reveal to our audience in terms of a show, so now we can consider performing in a large venue. Because there are things we think we’d like to do, we want to perform there. I think that’s how it is.

— Something that isn’t vague right? Does it have anything to do with the changes you experienced upon your musicality?

Tora: I suppose it does, but I think there’s a bigger tendency that leans toward our awareness. Or should I say, the coordination between the members. When we’re doing a live, I think that if there is no unity between the members, it won’t become anything good. Even though each member is expressing themselves, it will never be a good live. That is not the only meaning of performing live. Once we’ve decided on the direction we want to go, if I don’t start from thinking things through together with my fellow bandmates on our way toward that direction, we won’t be able to perform a great live. Even if we are performing in a large venue, I don’t think we can get anything across to the audience. I think that, first of all, we have to start from arranging our own awareness, and then walk forward toward that place.

— I understand. Tora-kun is also someone who views a band like Alice Nine objectively. With that same perspective, how do you see the changes that occurred to.other members?

Tora: The changes were big, I think. Since we performed for the first time in International Forum Hall, I believe everyone has gone through many changes. I suppose everyone else changed a lot more than I did. I think Saga-kun changed a lot. Shou-kun, too. Alice Nine has lost that much confidence to do things thoughtlessly. That is because, in a sense, we are a band that started from a condition where we had maximum confidence.

— Right now you’re speaking what you really think, aren’t you? In Tora-kun’s own way.

Tora: Yes (lol). But that’s honestly what I think. Ever since we formed the band, entered our current company, years have passed, and our confidence gradually diminished. However, around the time we first performed in International Forum Hall, when we reached the moment where we wanted to give up, when we thought, “There’s no use anymore,” everybody gathered and faced the same direction, and said, “Yosha! Let’s start again, this time with all we’ve got, let’s do our best from zero! Let’s do this seriously!” The moment we were able to think like that, it became some sort of an unique support. I suppose Alice Nine manages to continue because that moment existed. I think that maybe every band has this moment that acts as their turning point. But the number of bands that didn’t have a similar direction at the same time and ended up disbanding is not small either. That’s something Alice Nine stood up to and fixed.

— You’ve ‘become a band’ in its true meaning, right? I think Alice Nine has gone through an immense growth since that time.

Tora: Everyone has become adults, even the way we think. I think this is what a band is supposed to be, essentially. We weren’t ready at all for it in the past. Well, I believe there isn’t any band that understands to that extent when the members are in their twenties, but if they know how to understand it from the very beginning, they can be a really awesome band. I’m not judging or anything, but back then, the company we joined itself was also still very young, so I don’t think they had the means to give us, who were still green in the matter of music, any guidance. The company excelled at publicizing us in magazines, medias and such, but I think they were still on a growing level. We were still pretty much ignorant when we came in, so we were busy doing photoshoots more than making songs or doing lives, and when we were expected to have more skills, that expectation became a burden to us. Again, I’m not judging the company at all, seriously. I think the ones who had zero knowledge were ourselves. What I’m trying to say is, I feel that all of us, including the company, were growing together.

WINK UP [2014.01] - Saga Alice Nine

Wink Up January 2014: Saga: "I'm really young!"

Interviewer: This time around, we'd like to look back on 6 years of this continuing column.

Saga: I've had a lot of fun getting to do so many different things for Wink Up over the years. (While looking at past issues) Wow, I haven't changed much, have I? Actually, it almost seems as though I looked older in the past, compared to how I look now,.haha.
When my family gets together everyone says to me "time seems to stop only for you!" Heh. Recently when we went to my grandpa's, he said I look younger than my brother, and he's 3 years younger than I am! Haha. I'm happy about that, but it's funny, isn't it? For musicians, y'know, our hair and stuff isn't the norm, right? I wonder if I went back to black hair, would I still look this way?

Interviewer: I don't think we've seen anyone in the band go back to all black before! But I do think that anyone in your position would still look young.

Saga: Is it a matter of consciousness, I wonder? Like, with Tora, when we're just working, and not doing a live or a photo shoot or something, he gets really careless and loosens up, heh. And sometimes I'm like "Eh? Are you alright?" But right before a live, an aura starts to emit from him. That surprises me! Recently I saw an actress on the street and she had no aura about her, her stage presence was nil. I was shocked! But when you're up in front of an audience, it's typical to emit an aura. Although ordinarily I barely show 20% of a stage presence, ha. Back in the day, I put up a front, I wore a mask. But lately onstage, I've been myself, I've become really casual. I think that's a good thing, though. I think a natural stance is best. Not trying to overdo it,y'know?
(Rereading old articles) Inside, my core, it hasn't changed at all, really. See, here I said "I can never talk to someone that I like," and that's the same even now. I could never say anything to them, they'd think "my god, he's depressing" and that'd be the end of it, ha!

Interviewer: Ahaha! What would you like to do next?

Saga: Looking back on all of this, it was decadent; that poorly constituted makeup looked okay; the one cosplay set-up where I had the doctor's lab coat on, that looked good, heh. I kind of unraveled at that age, haha. Wink Up, I wanna show off a different side of me than what I show onstage. I wanna go to a kindergarten and pose for pics with the kids there!

*With our kids too, please~*

Alice Nine ♠Saga♠ - WINK-UP l2013.05]

Saga was given the opportunity to cosplay with a ‘doctor’ theme. The image was of Faust VIII from [Shaman King].

— Being too engrossed in their work, the staff laughed out loud when they saw Saga-sama coming out of the make-room (lol).
Saga: Nah, I myself was surprised (lol). There was a lot of request for me from fans and from people at the office, saying, “It’ll be great if you cosplay a doctor!”, so I did it. But it turns out I’m totally cosplaying as myself from the moment I first set foot in the visual kei scene (lol)

— Did you wear this kind of makeup back then?
Saga: That’s right. When I first began I had no idea what kind of makeup would be good in the visual kei world, so I learned by watching others, thinking, “Maybe like this?”. I did my own research and this was how it turned out (lol). Personally I was thinking of trying to cosplay Joker from the movie [Dark Knight], but when I completed the look, it was totally unclear who I looked like. I wonder if I was lacking the fitting factors, I’ll just entrust myself in everyone’s opinion. But I did have the interest of becoming a doctor, and since my mother is a nurse, she seemed like she wanted me to become a doctor. I myself, if there hadn’t been any hurdle in studying, I wanted to become a doctor as well.

Knowledge and academic abilities are surely a necessity, but being a doctor isn’t just about seeing a lot of blood during surgeries and cutting up people. I think it’s impossible for people with common nerves. While I’m talking about this, although I might sound rude, but I think to possess an extraordinary willpower and curiosity, you need to have that small abnormal factor. Since I’m sufficiently abnormal, it’s clear (lol). I’m fine with seeing blood, and, not in the curiosity-seeking manner, I have interest in the human body. Since there are numerous curiosity- seeking occurrences in this world, and since by no means I am trying to affirm it, I absolutely don’t want to cause any misunderstanding.

But I think that, whatever interests you, something will emerge out of curiosity. Don’t you ever wonder, when you see some kind of food that you’ve never eaten, “how does that taste like”? I can speak the same about the relationship between a man and a woman. I have interest in what I myself don’t possess. When I pick up movies to watch, I also choose the ones I’m interested in. That is also one of the things that intrigues me. Whatever it is, doesn’t it start from something that you’re interested in? The same goes with makeup and cosplay. It all starts from interest and curiosity. Wouldn’t it be good if I seized my personality from there?

Alice Nine - WINK-UP [2013.02]

WINK-UP [2013.02]

Shou-kun has become a butler.

Why did you choose butler cosplay?

Shou: I thought that butler would be good. Speaking of butlers, inside of me there’s a “capable man”.*Also I like the manga “Black Butler”. So I wanted to try dressing up as one at least once.

I see. In Japan there aren’t really any butlers.
Shou: Of course. In Japan there are almost no household butlers. Overseas they are just a normal part of culture. In Japan they’re still something out of anime. But for me since I used to work at a restaurant, somehow it has a similar feeling. Somehow even though I’m usually warm and fuzzy when an emergency occurs I go “Whack!” (laugh)

I see. Even though a butler is very devoted, it’s because it’s required by his job, but is Shou-kun normally the devoted type?**
Shou: Rather than being devoted I’d prefer someone to be devoted to me. No, rather than that, I wondered whether I’m the devoted type but before this there was a meeting and I had my fortune told by a fortune-teller so it seems like I’m the type that wants to be served. (laugh) But the truth is that I prefer to take care of someone so you can say I’m the devoted type. Yet I think always being the one who tries to please is no good. (laugh) It’s good when a person knows how to give and take. Since I was raised in an athletic environment I consider such things a matter of courtesy. I think not forgetting the favour you received from people and returning it properly should be the most basic rule. Thus the mentality of “Thank you” is fundamental. For the people who have this mentality you naturally want to do something. But if you work as a butler you would have to devote yourself completely.

The feeling of gratitude is essential in any type of relationship. What about love?
Shou: To avoid a one-sided relationship*** I want to both give and receive. I think it's good when a relationship has an equal power balance and you are mutually attracted to each other. In that sense it’s the same with fans. When we see them pleased we feel happy and that makes us want to write better songs and to play even more enjoyable concerts. I’m not the only one who feels that way. I think that it is because there is the other party that you have this feeling of wanting to please.

PATi-PATi Magazine — Alice in Wonderwords [2013.01]

♚[Segment 1]

This is the last part in the monthly series where Shou invites his band members and makes a presentation of the band’s words (lyrics) in photographs. All 5 band members made appearance, Shou selected the lyrics and together they created this article. Here the story that Alice Nine has woven comes to an end.

Kowarete hibiki au sore demo ii sa~ (Subete e)
(Even if we’re broken, we’ll resound together, that is also good.)

Shou: Overall “Subete e” lyrics are extravagant all the way so it was hard to choose just one verse. I guess the “broken~” part is the explanation about people who play in bands. One by one we are lacking, but in a band we complement each other and resound like one music.

Hiroto: Of course, the lacking band members. (laugh)

Tora: Since we are all broken.

Shou: (laugh) But I think in the long run if you look at it it’s all thanks to the band members.

Saga: I composed this song and I remember when Shou-kun added the lyrics I talked to the producer and he (or I) said: “The lyrics are awesome!” It’s Buddha level! He achieved enlightenment.

Shou: Even though there are all sorts of hard things and foul things but not hating the world and declaring “I love you”, even now looking at it I think it’s cool.

Hiroto: The picture we took this time to represent the lyrics, isn’t it good? Although I do think at the time of the band’s formation we had the chance to do a photoshoot while chatting, even now without changing the feeling from that time, being able to do this is a wonderful thing, isn’t it?

Nao: The things that we talked about that time were out of a dream. The kind of things you can’t say loudly. (laugh) The aura or should I say pheromones that we emanate gives off a mature feeling. We’ve become adults (laugh)

Shou: This time we decided all 5 of us should participate. Before we would invite band members one by one, I’m glad now we can summarize with “Subete e”. If I were to say one thing, normally the vocalist is sitting in the middle so there’s no problem, but when you sit in the corner because of the wide-angle lens your face gets stretched so I m really hate it! (laugh)

Saga: Saga and Tora become the victims of this effect almost every time! By the way, I proposed something called “incorporation” but it was dismissed. I want to try it sometime.

Shou: It didn’t seem good so we decided to go without.

Tora: Thus we extracted a part of the lyrics, did a photoshoot, and created a new concept. It was really enjoyable.

Shou: That’s right. Before our 9th anniversary we managed to revise our lyrics and history, reaffirm the band that is Alice Nine. I would be happy if people who read this series will get interested in our music even a little.

♚[Segment 2]

Quote 19: “There is no such thing as one truth, every person has their own truth and their own world.” — Friedrich Nietzsche

Alice Nine’s vocalist, Shou. In this series every month we publish a great quote, meet with him and he writes down his own understanding of it and stories from his life. This month it’s a quote from a philosopher who left us a lot of great words… Today a lot of lucky and unlucky things happened… and so on. It seems like everyone is in good spirits. It’s already December. Let’s continue to the last Alice in Wonderwords of 2012.

To support our album “9”released In February we had a tour called “Court of “9” #1” in April and “#2” in July as well as having concerts in Asia for the first time. In December we had the “# 3” tour with concerts divided by using the dress code of white clothes and black clothes. On December 31st we had a countdown concert and thus all year round from #1 to # l 4 we had tours related to the album “9”. Since the pace of new releases is fast and we really live in the age of consumerism I think it’s a true luxury that this year we were able to stock up on energy. The things we want to do. The things we must do. The things we’d like to do for our fans. We were able to properly reaffirm it.
Even though we weren't doing any big public activities people always kept supporting us… for such a precious, treasure-like existence, for myself, for Alice Nine’s 9th anniversary next year I want to flap my wings.

So this month the quote I’m going to discuss belongs to Nietzsche. “There is no such thing as one truth, every person has their own truth and their own world.” I tried to introduce this quote and I got the chance to do it through the usual social networks such as Twitter, people shared their opinions, worries and troubles.

The most common theme of discussion was people saying that the right answer for them differs from the right answer for other people and even though they have their own ideals, dreams and the truth that they strive for, they were told that they have to abide to the current state of things according to other people’s and environment’s rules so the gap between their ideals and reality makes them worried. Moreover, since they can understand the reasons behind other people’s opinions and the current state of things, they end up getting even more confused. Yet, as the quote states, there is more than one truth. You might think that what you do is for the best but end up hurting someone, or unintentionally do something that benefits someone.

Humans are imperfect, the imperfect humans formed things like communities, and it also happens that different truths collide and contradict each other. Thus I try not to perceive things as right or wrong, I try to make judgements based on what I want and what would increase the cumulative happiness. In the end a person’s truth is something that would be most convenient for them. There isn't a person in the world whose truth would be something inconvenient for them. Thus all you can do is live without thinking too deep trying not to be manipulated by your surroundings and asking yourself “Is this really something I want to do?” If somewhere there was a computer that could teach us “the only right answer”, it’d probably be a different story but since there is no such thing as “the only right answer”, it sounds unbelievable something out of a fairy-tale.

“Every person has their own truth and their own world” So every person’s truth is not perfect. In this world a person can’t live alone, there are also things that you can’t overcome on your own without joining forces with other people. But since different truths exist, you want to peek into worlds unknown to you and explore each other’s worlds. Thus I also like to do the same part- time job with people who aren’t singers. So Happy New Year, everyone!

“There is no such thing as one truth, every person has their own truth and their own world.”

BARKS - Daybreak [2013.03.26] Interview

Alice Nine: “If I can’t do this then I have no talent. There was power in this song that made me able to
write lyrics that possess such
graciousness”

This is Alice Nine, who are going
to celebrate the 9th anniversary
of their major debut in 2013. To
mark the beginning of the band’s
anniversary year, they released
the first of their 3 consecutive
months single-releases [Daybreak]; a song that can be said to consolidate their foundation as a rock band; a song
that reflects the good feeling that
Alice Nine has achieved so far.

We enquired Alice Nine about their current state—the band that has just completed their newest
masterpiece, [Daybreak], a song
overflowing with confidence in
addition to its refined sound-
making. Furthermore, BARKS
asked 9 keywords to unravel Alice
Nine’s plan to release singles in 3
consecutive months. This first
part consists these 3 keywords:
[Character], [Formation], and
[Band’s name]; the members gave
their honest answers of the untold stories about the time
they were formed. So please check this out.

◆ “To put it simply, I thought
we’d aim to become an awesome
band, just like the bands that
influenced us.” (Saga)

— This year Alice Nine moved into a new recording company, and at the same time you are also
celebrating your 9th anniversary.
You’re rushing into your 9th
Anniversary Year’s commemoration. In terms of the
members’ relationship, what has
changed now compared to how it
was in the past?
Shou (Vo) : Are you saying, when
we get into a fight or something
like that? We’re completely fine
with each other.
Tora (G) : There’s no reason to be
in a fight.
Shou: A few moments ago, we
were even talking about going out
for drinks today after this
interview is over. (Everyone
laughs)
Tora: Our mood is like a bunch of students’.
Shou: Because the conversations
that happened between us in the
dressing room and other places up to this moment were still in
junior high school level. (lol)

— Although the relationship
between the members hasn’t
changed, I think that the band’s
sound has gone through lots of
changes after all these years. In
particular, [GEMINI] and [“9”], the
productions that have set up a
solid basis for Alice Nine as a
“rock band”. If those albums were
never made, I wonder if you
would manage to create the
fashionable and refreshing sound
that this single, [Daybreak], was
full of.
Shou: Thanks to Saga (B) who had
exerted himself as the main
composer ever since [VANDALIZE], the members’ sense of music expanded. Up to that moment, I suppose I have always thought that we were a band, but for the 5 of us to face forward with the belief that we’re a “rock band” in its true meaning, we hardened our consciousness by creating [GEMINI] and [“9”]. Furthermore, I think we had become accustomed to being one in a higher level. If we have never made those records, I don’t think we would be able to possess this confidence and to put forth something that has such power like [Daybreak].
Saga: In our case, although we’ve
solidified our visual appearance
and our course of activities, there
were also times when we pushed
ahead without having the essential foundation that a band
was supposed to have in terms of
music. We started out as a session band, and once we went through that phase, without knowing what kind of music standard this band would have, we went on and created songs. So, in each single, each person had a different comprehension of Alice Nine’s image. Once we laid down our foundation and the singles changed one by one, no matter what kind of song we created, it felt like, “This is the kind of sound we can make at the moment”. That’s why, in terms of the band’s foundation, with the thought of wanting to build a band with a firm footing, we gradually forged ourselves starting from around
[VANDALIZE].

— Do you mean that this
premonition was clear in your mind?
Saga: To put it simply, I thought
we’d aim to become an awesome
band, just like the bands that
influenced us.
Shou: When are you planning to
reach that goal?
All members: “Now, right!!” (all
bursts into laughter)

◆ “To give you an example, this
time we’re eating Genovese in a
rather fashionable Italian
restaurant. And next, it’s a gaudy
tonkotsu ramen restaurant
(lol).” (Shou)

Saga: [Daybreak] was created on
top of the band’s foundation, but
if we had come out with this song
without a foundation, it would
have sounded different. [Daybreak] is a poppish, catchy
track, but since we’ve established
our foundation as a rock band, I
think it came out as a cool song.
Since we’ve created the basis of a
rock band, and because we were at the end of [“9”], I think we
should add new colors from now
on.

— So, [Daybreak] is the first step
in the production with these new
colors attached.
Saga: That’s right. The title itself
has the meaning of “Dawn”.
Shou: There were around 10
songs to pick from back then, but
everyone from the producer, staff, and members agreed to
work on this song. Personally I
think that in the opening feel in
the hook’s melody should be the
main point of the positive feeling.
The original song was a bit more
punk-ish, wasn’t it?
Tora: That’s right.
Shou: The arrangement changed
180°.

— You applied some elaborate
audio in the process, in a rather
UK-taste.
Hiroto (G) : This time Hiraide
(Satoru)-san acted as the producer. Together, we managed to work on something with incredible depth. As a result, we have this sound. The level of this song’s arrangement felt really creative, right?
Shou: The way the producer did
everything all the way to the track-down, I think we need to thank Hiraide-san for the sensitivity that runs through every nook of the sound.
Saga: That’s why, down to the
final form of the sound’s image, we went to work while keeping in
mind the gap that we could find
between each sound.
Nao (Dr) : Hiraide-san was a
drummer himself, so my work
was pretty hard. He kept an eye
on me until the final stage, and in
addition, he also did his own
tuning on the drums during
recording.

— And the result is this cool audio that is finely calculated to
the last detail, and then on top of
that, Shou-san’s singing gave it a
hot contrast. The lyrics touched
me deeply.
Shou: Up to this point, there has
been a pressure to write particularly good lyrics for the
singles, so I read lots of books
and watched lots of movies, and
then took notes from them. When
I listened to the sound of this song, I thought that I had no choice but to face my inner self, so I couldn’t use only the words
that were already there in my
head. If I can’t do this then I have no talent. There was power in this song that made me able to write lyrics that possess such graciousness. As a result, it turned into a song that does not
only depict the members of Alice
Nine, but also describes our
current situation.

— The music video is also in a
scale beyond everything you’ve
done up until now. Your thoughts
about that greatly powerful video?
Shou: It was shot in a desert-like
place in Shizuoka. We went just
before dawn.
Tora: The set was absolutely not
made-up.
Shou: We shot the video in below
freezing temperature, -5°, with
the wind blowing violently, and
we were only wearing spring
clothes.
Hiroto: But you can’t see how it
really was from the video.
Shou: Knowing that, I think people who see Saga during the last part where everyone was walking together would notice and say, “Ah… I understand.” (lol)
Saga: In my heart I was like, “… I
give up… this is impossible.” I had
zero willpower.
Shou: He kept saying over and
over again, “Why did you give it
‘Daybreak’ as a title” (lol).

— Next, please tell us a bit about
the coupling song, [Himitsu]. This
is kind of like Alice’s style of hiphop. It is more than anything
a stylish song.
Saga: Even though we’ve been
thoroughly talking about our
foundation as a rock band up to
this point, this time we strayed
far away from rock. It’s because
I’ve been listening to nothing but
clean songs with un-distorted
guitar sounds (lol). This song was
made with the mood of wanting
to become a more stylish band. I
wrote it also with the wish to see
a new atmosphere in our live
performance.

— This hiphop-like orientation, I
think it’s something really
interesting.
Saga: Although, there’s no
foundation of a band at all in this
side.
Nao: It will take me 3 years to
contribute to its reinforcement
(lol).

— What sort of Alice Nine will you deliver next month?
Shou: To give you an example, this time we’re eating Genovese in
a rather fashionable Italian
restaurant. And next, it’s a gaudy
tonkotsu ramen restaurant! (lol)
Hiroto: Moreover it’s “Iekei” ramen restaurant.
Nao : The noodles are hardening
(lol).

— Continuing, I think now I want
to get to know Alice Nine, starting
from the first part of the 9
keywords of “3 Consecutive Months Alice Nine’s 9th
Anniversary Special Project”.

◆ No. 1 [Character]

— In the morning when you wake
up, you find that you suddenly
have turned into Shou-san. What
will you do?
Tora: If my face becomes like
this… I’m going to a group date.
Saga: Without any hesitation, I’m
going to pick up girls.
Nao: First of all, I’m going to go
outside, and then I want to sing
out loud with all my might among
the pleasant weather.
Hiroto: I want to sing a song for
someone!

— What if you’ve turned into
Hiroto-san?
Shou: I guess I want to play guitar for someone!
Tora: First of all, I’m going to a group date (lol).
Saga: I’d like to try and make a
move towards the girls who are
fawning over Hiroto in front of him during a live.
Nao: I’m going to steal that guy’s
precious little pet dog, Mogu.

— If you’ve turned into Tora-san?
Shou: If I turn into Tora… group
date? (lol)
Saga: Definitely a group date, right.
Nao: I’ll go back to sleep because I think it must be a dream (lol). And then I’ll take a look inside
my pants. (everyone bursts into
roar of laughter)
Hiroto: Since he’s good at talking, I want to give that a try.

— If you’ve turned into Saga-san?
Shou: Even though he wants to
wear normal clothes, I’d like to
dress Saga’s slender body with
Western-styled ladies’ clothes.
Tora: If I turned into Saga, there
are a number of things but… of
course it’s group date! (lol)
Nao: First I’d like to check the
balance in his bank account (lol).
Hiroto: I’d like to try to see
forward with one eye closed. I
think that, because Saga-kun’s
nose is high, the world that he
sees is different from what I see
(lol).

— If you’ve turned into Nao-san?
Shou: I can eat stuff that I myself
can’t eat, like crab and lamb meat, I’m going to eat those foods and then tell you about the taste.
Tora: Group date? I don’t think
Nao-san has the group date kind of feeling (lol). I think Nao-san can get deeply emotional, so first and foremost I’d like to find out Nao-san’s mode of life.
Saga: Nao-san is… his body is
extremely sensitive! Because that’s not a part of myself, I’d like to do something to make the best use of it! (lol)
Hiroto: For sure, Nao-san’s
sensitivity worries me (lol). Nao-
san’s greatness that can’t be
experienced even for a day… it’s
impossible to answer that!!

◆ No. 2 [Formation]

— As of now, we’re going to talk
about the untold story of Alice
Nine’s formation.
Tora: There was another guitarist
before Hiroto!!
Shou: It started with these guys
(Nao and Saga) and these guys
(Shou and Tora) gathering up to
form a band.
Saga: In the beginning there were
the 3 of us, and then we teamed
up with these guys (Shou and Tora).
Shou: And then the 5 of us went
into the studio, but…
Saga: Everyone felt somewhat
uncomfortable. Toward that
guitarist. The guy himself felt it. He must have read it in the
atmosphere among us.
Tora: He said, “Why not me?”
Nao: And then he faded out on
his own initiative.

◆ No. 3 [Band’s Name]

— And then from now on, we’re
going to talk about the band’s
name, Alice Nine, and its true
origins.
Shou: All the members except
Nao-san had a talk in a restaurant
in Shinjuku to decide the band’s
name. We couldn’t come up with
any name that’s satisfactory. And
then Saga-kun said something like, “Anita-san sounds nice” (lol).
Saga: And then there’s KORN.
Although there’s already a band
named that.
Tora: We used the inverted R
from KORN because I thought it
was cool.
Saga: We were horrible, huh (wry
smile).
Shou: There were a lot of theories as to how Alice Nine was chosen as the band’s name, but back then I was so into reading a novel by Nagano Mayumi-san titled “Shounen Alice”. And I also liked a fashion brand called NUMBER(N)INE. The other members that were present back
then also thought that 9 was a cool, rock-ish number, so then we combined ‘Alice’ and ‘9’. We
decided on it with a “what about
using this for now?” kind of feeling. And to Nao-san who
couldn’t attend the gathering back then, we gave him a notice to check this name that we had looked over on the net. I think
until today, this is the first time
I’ve ever talked about the origins
of the band’s name.
